Spring 2026 Spotlight
Dick Scarlett
Class of '84 · Lander, WY
ΣΑΕ
Dick Scarlett grew up on a ranch in Wyoming and came to UW on a basketball scholarship, where he was recruited to SAE by a neighbor who was an alumnus. He was elected recruitment chairman his sophomore year and led the chapter to its largest pledge class ever — 50+ pledges. He served as Eminent Archon in the second half of his junior year and completed his military service during the Berlin Crisis when President Kennedy recalled reservists.
After graduating, Dick entered banking at First National Bank of Lander, then joined American National Bank of Denver — becoming president in 1972. He went on to found Cherry Creek National Bank, purchased Jackson State Bank in 1981, and built the largest bank holding company in Wyoming, which he sold to Wells Fargo in November 2007.
Dick is also the lead donor for the capital campaign, having given at the Phi Alpha Society level ($100,000+). Contact Dick at dick@scarlettcapital.com.
Winter 2024 · Class of '05
Tom helped restore Wyoming Alpha's charter when the chapter was down to one member, honoring the legacy of his father, Bernard Phelan '71. He served as eminent archon, spent ~15 years as chapter advisor, and became Province Eta president in 2024. He works at Empower Retirement in Denver and hopes his son Will will one day join Wyoming Alpha.
Campaign Donor · Class of '81
Matt grew up in Goshen County, WY and credits SAE for teaching him the meaning of "The True Gentleman." He notes Wyoming Alpha won the Minerva Award for best chapter in the country. He co-founded Cliff Outdoors ~30 years ago and still runs it from Casper. He and wife Jane pledged to the renovation campaign.
Class of '72 · Fort Worth, TX
Steve spent 39 years at PGA Colonial in Fort Worth, volunteers at a children's hospital three times per week, has traveled to 41 countries, and still golfs four to five days a week. A brother who has truly lived a life of service.
Class of '78 · Apple Valley, MN
Retired Navy pilot, retired VA director, and head coach of the St. Olaf College alpine ski team. A brother who carried the Wyoming Alpha spirit into a life of service and leadership.
Class of '80 · Henderson, NV
UNLV professor, entrepreneur, and casino gaming consultant. One of many Wyoming Alpha brothers who have gone on to distinguished academic and business careers.
Class of '60 · Retired
Currently restoring a 1973 Ford Bronco in Mt. Vernon, WA, near the Canadian border — and loving every minute of it.
